LONG WAY HOME
A bike ride home – the long way
Blog Updates
Time flies when you’re having fun
As it turns out, maintaining a blog about a seemingly infinite array of daily experiences whilst cycling around the world is more work than I thought. It’s hard to believe that my last post is about my time in Java and that I am now hurtling through the edge of the Kazakh Steppe on a […]
Central Java
I met Marwan on the outskirts of Yogyakarta. Yogya (pronounced D’jogd’ja) is internationally famous for its proximity to some World Heritage Listed Buddhist temples, a little ironic given that there are almost no Buddhists living there today. Indonesia is also home to the world’s largest Muslim population with over 85% of the country’s 280 million […]
Volcanic Action
I arrived on the outskirts of a town called Probolinggo near dusk. My hotel was just off the main road towards Mt Bromo. Unfortunately my hotel did not exist. I cycled around in circles for half an hour even enlisting the help of locals to find a place that apparently wasn’t there and did not […]
About Me
Hi, my name is David. I am currently on the journey of a lifetime – cycling from my doorstep in Melbourne, Australia all the way back to my old doorstep in Cushendall, Northern Ireland. I moved to Australia when I was 17 years old and I have now spent half my life here. What better way to mark this milestone than travelling by bike over the next 12 – 18 months taking the long way back.
I love all things cycling but nothing excites me more than adventure cycling, touring through wild natural landscapes, leap frogging from one island of civilisation to the next. My plan is to ride through the epic Red Centre of Australia eventually getting to Darwin. From there I will try to take a boat to Indonesia and then make my way to the South East Asian mainland. I will pass through the Indian subcontinent up into the Himalayas before heading for Central Asia and the Middle East eventually entering Europe via the Caucasus and Turkey.
As part of my trip, I am raising money for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) here in Australia. I am passionate about the right of all people, no matter where we are born to a decent quality of life.
The ASRC is a fantastic organisation that supports people seeking asylum. Any donation, great or small is much appreciated – you can donate by clicking the button below.
